Newport News, Va. - (June 2010) - Runners from throughout the region will gather in The Mariners’ Museum Park on Saturday, Oct. 16 for the 10th Annual 5K and 10K on the Noland Trail. The 5K race will start at 8:45 A.M., following a course along Museum Drive and into the neighboring Riverside neighborhood. The 10K race will start at 9 A.M. following a course along Museum Drive and into the Park along the scenic Noland Trail.

Runners of all ages are encouraged to participate, but the 10K race is limited to the first 300 registrants. Prizes will be awarded in a variety of age groups for both races. Pre-registration is $25 if received by 5 P.M. on Friday, October 1 or $20 for members of the Friends of the Park. From October 2 until race day, registration will be $30 per person. The first 500 registered participants will receive a free long-sleeved event T-shirt.

Proceeds benefit The Mariners’ Museum Park. The 10th Annual 5K and 10K on the Noland Trail is sponsored in part by Riverside Hospital, the Orthopaedic & Spine Center, Associates in Dermatology, Inc., and the Peninsula Track Club.

The rain date for the event is the following Saturday, Oct. 23.

Volunteers are needed for the Museum’s Annual Park Clean-up, which will begin at 1 P.M., following the 10K. Participants are asked to register in advance and will work in specific areas of need within The Mariners’ Museum Park. Volunteers will receive a free t-shirt and are also invited to enjoy refreshments and a lecture following the event. The Park Clean-Up is sponsored in part by a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network. For more information or to volunteer, contact Christopher Spraggins at (757) 591-7747.

The 500-acre Mariners’ Museum Park is the nation’s largest privately owned and maintained park open for free to the public. Thanks to the ongoing generosity of the Noland Family, the Noland Trail, a popular walking and running destination, offers scenic views of Lake Maury as it winds through the park and over fourteen wooden foot bridges. The Lion’s Bridge is another Park landmark, noted for its four lion statues created by the artist Anna Hyatt Huntington.
