Original entries were identified using The Monitor: A Bibliography, by Gordon P. Watts, Jr. and James A. Pleasants, Jr., published in 1978, and The Monitor and the Merrimac: A Bibliography, by David R. Smith, published in 1968. In addition, staff searched the Online Computer Library Center, Inc. (OCLC) database and a variety of newspapers, magazines, government publications, reference publications, and online resources, including the holdings of The Library at The Mariners' Museum and the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary. Compilers have made every effort to examine the sources included in this bibliography. Bibliographic entries follow modified guidelines based upon the Chicago Manual of Style, 14th edition. Vessel names appear in italics, except when a vessel name occurs in an italicized title. In the latter case, the vessel name occurs in roman type font. When referring to the Union frigate Merrimack, we have used the proper spelling with a "k" on the end but have not attempted to correct all listings cited in this bibliography. Also, when mentioning the renamed Confederate ironclad, we have used the name Virginia.
Several abbreviations are used frequently in the bibliography. They include ed. for editor, ExDoc for Executive Document, GPO for Government Printing Office, NOAA for National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, pp. for pages, USCG for United States Coast Guard, and USN for United States Navy.
This bibliography is a work in progress. Our goal is to create a comprehensive bibliography to support research on the USS Monitor and future educational initiatives of a national Monitor center at The Mariners' Museum. In 2002, Library staff plan a major enhancement of the bibliography, adding manuscript material, including letters, plans, drawings, photographs, and special archival collections and adding books, articles, and government publications as they are published or identified. We also plan to incorporate references to the Weldon Hester clippings into the bibliography, to create new annotated entries, to link entries to selected images of pamphlets and documents, and eventually to convert the bibliography to an easily searchable database.
We encourage you to forward new material, updates, corrections, and comments to library@mariner.org or to The Library at The Mariners' Museum at 100 Museum Drive, Newport News, VA 23606, Attn: USS Monitor Bibliography.
