1091. "U.S. Seeks Protection Around Monitor Site," Virginian-Pilot [Norfolk, VA], 12 February 1986. This is a proposal by the U.S. Deptartment of the Interior to ban "offshore oil and gas exploration in a 36-square mile area" around the Monitor wreck.

1092. "Underwater Act: Inventor Proposes Way to Show Monitor," Virginian-Pilot [Norfolk, VA], 3 November 1987. Charles F. Hines, a retired mechanical contractor from Caroline County, VA, proposes a huge cylinder be placed around the wreck and the water removed. This arrangement would allow tourists to visit the remains. E. M. Miller of NOAA is quoted as saying the proposal will get a fair review.

1093. "Underwater Propeller Surgery Saving Historic Union Warship," Detroit News & Free Press, 31 August 1995. This is an overview [by Free Press staff and The New York Times] of the efforts to retrieve the propeller, with historical background of the Battle of Hampton Roads. John Broadwater of NOAA and Billy Black of the Edenton are quoted. Historically speaking, the article suffers from distortions and mistakes.

PER VK1.N46 This is a very short announcement of the five applicants that submitted proposals to become the "principal museum" for the Monitor artifacts and papers. The Mariners' Museum, South Street Seaport Museum, the city of Portsmouth, VA, New York- based U.S.S. Monitor Museum, and a consortium made up of the USN, the state of North Carolina, and the Smithsonian Institution are the interested parties.

1098. "USS Monitor Anchor Recovered After 120 Years Submerged." Sea Technology 24, no. 10 (October 1983): 46-47. PER TC1501.U55 Details the 1983 expedition on the Johnson with photos of the anchor during recovery. Nancy Foster, C. E. Peterson, and Roger Cook are mentioned.

Explains the confusion and hard feelings surrounding the Monitor Technical Review Committee and Jacques Cousteau's request to film. Among the officials mentioned are Larry Tise, J. Barto Arnold, III, Gov. James B. Hunt, Jr., of North Carolina, and Carolista Baum.

PER CC1.C44 This is an announcement of the planning committee and subcommittee personnel for the USS Monitor Project. Some of the experts listed include Edward C. Bearss, Ross Holland, Calvin Cummings, E. W. Peterkin, and Philip K. Lundeberg.
