Three large holes discovered by divers may mean the hull of the Monitor may never be raised intact, announces Floyd Childress of NOAA. The article notes this is a setback to the Monitor Research and Recovery Foundation, Inc., which hoped the ship could be raised and displayed in Norfolk.

1077. Tise, Larry E. "Jacques Cousteau, the U.S.S. Monitor, and the Philosophy and Practice of Public History." Public History 5, no. 1 (winter 1983): 31-45. A telling and at times amusing article by the former director of the North Carolina Division of Archives and History and chairman of the Technical Advisory Committee for research in the Monitor Marine Sanctuary. The author describes the reaction of the press and public when the Cousteau Society was denied permission to make a brief foray into the sanctuary. After describing the principles that should guide a public history organization, Tise evaluates his own performance and lessons learned from this very public event.

1090. Tyler, Lyon Gardiner. "Virginia, Founder of the World's Navies." Tyler's Quarterly Historical and Genealogical Magazine 3, no. 2 (October 1921): 84-106. In a nutshell, Tyler's view is that the victory of the Virginia in the Battle of Hampton Roads changed naval warfare. The author makes use of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies and postwar memoirs. More interesting, the article concludes with a reprint of a letter Tyler received from Capt. W. D. MacDougall of the Naval Records and Library (dtd June 28, 1921) and a report submitted (dtd January 5, 1868) by Worden concerning Greene's performance during the battle.
