Ironclads, Chemistry & Conservation

Using The Mariners’ Museum’s state-of-the-art Batten Conservation Lab as a backdrop, participants examine how chemistry is used to conserve metal and organic objects found in a marine archaeological environment. Real world application is discussed as you learn about ongoing conservation of artifacts recovered from the Civil War Ironclad Monitor and how lessons can be 
applied in the classroom.

Boating and the Bay: Fresh vs. Saltwater

Take your classroom-based knowledge to the great outdoors as we spend the day on Lake Maury and in the Mariners’ Park. We’ll spend the day exploring the flora and fauna of the fresh water lake and the James River shoreline. We’ll have a chance to analyze both fresh and brackish water and discuss the characteristics of both.
