2013 Teacher Workshops
Take one day to enrich your students’ learning all year long!
The Mariners’ Museum’s Teacher Workshops are designed to provide instructors with new insights into creating and implementing more engaging and stimulating lesson plans for the classroom. Each day-long session focuses on both essential historical facts and creative ways to bring history alive for your students. Emphasis is placed on connecting history with economics, math, science, and language arts and continuing the learning process long past the school day.
Workshops can be taken for recertification points!!
The cost is $50 per workshop per day. (Discounts given for multiple workhop registration.)
The price includes teacher materials, a catered lunch and free admission to The Mariners’ Museum.

Age of Exploration Examine a time when worlds collided. We’ll focus on Europe’s desire to reach Asia, the resulting expansion into the New World, and the cultural impact felt around the globe. Ironclads, Chemistry & Conservation Using The Mariners’ Museum’s state-of-the-art Batten Conservation Lab as a backdrop, participants examine how chemistry is used to conserve metal and organic objects found in a marine archaeological environment. Real world application is discussed as you learn about ongoing conservation of artifacts recovered from the Civil War Ironclad Monitor and how lessons can be Science SOLs: CH.1: a, b, c; CH.2: c, g, h; CH.3: a-e; CH.4: g; CH.5: a-f Points Earned: 5 ---------------------------------------- Chesapeake Bay: An Estuary in Crisis
While exploring changes in the Chesapeake Bay over time, this workshop discusses the factors that have contributed to its decline. We will examine the ecosystem of the Bay and its watershed, the impact of the Bay on the regional and national economy, and discover new and fun ways to bring the topic to life for your students.
Science SOLs: LS 4.5, 4.8, 5.5, 6.7, 10, 11 ES 9; Bio 9 Points Earned: 5 ---------------------------------------- Boating and the Bay: Fresh vs. Saltwater Take your classroom-based knowledge to the great outdoors as we spend the day on Lake Maury and in the Mariners’ Park. We’ll spend the day exploring the flora and fauna of the fresh water lake and the James River shoreline.
