Sailor's Valentine
| Sailor's Valentine Bridgetown, Barbados, British West Indies, ca 1884-1889 Gift of Mr. Robertson B. Ten Broeck and Miss Margo M. Ten Broeck 1987.07.01 |

Visiting ports all over the world, sailors often brought back souvenirs and mementos from their travels. Some ports catered to this burgeoning market making such souvenirs for sailors. One such product was the sailor's valentine, an inexpensive souvenir produced in Barbados of local seashells. This double octagonal example was brought back by Captain David Chapin Warren from a voyage to Barbados in the coasting schooner Edward Johnson.
